In the performance of their duty, security guards must routinely make decisions regarding to the use of force. The responsibility to make appropriate decisions in an ever-present environment reality and is not diminished by the fact that the security guard must make these decisions often in the worst circumstances.
This is an 8 hour course that must be completed within 12 calendar months from completion of the 47 Hour Firearms Training Course for Armed Guards, and annually thereafter. To attend the course students must possess a valid pistol license pursuant to NY Penal Law Section 400.00 and a valid NYS security guard registration card.
The course consists of 3 hours of NYS Penal Law Article 35 (Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force) and 5 hours of range instruction and qualification. To successfully complete the course the student must pass a written examination on Article 35 and qualify with a handgun. All students who take this course are required to qualify with a minimum of seventy percent (70%) on a fifty round shooting course (minimum passing score is 35 rounds within the designated target area). The Eight Hour Annual Firearms Training Course for Armed Security Guards should be completed in one eight-hour session.
EXAMINATIONS
Two examinations are required for successful completion of the 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training Course for Armed Security Guards. Students must pass the written Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force examination and fire one qualifying round with either a duty types semi-automatic pistol or duty type revolver.
Students currently employed as armed security guards must train and qualify with the handgun(s) they are authorized to carry in the performance of their duties utilizing service/duty ammunition.
Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force Examination
A ten (10) question written examination based on the topics and objectives contained in the 3 Hour Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force component of instruction.
A minimum score of 90% percent must be achieved by each student.
Range Qualification
The second examination is a duty type handgun course of fire to demonstrate firearms handling, safety, and proficiency. The qualifying course of fire must be completed with duty type handguns. The qualifying handgun course of fire consists of fifty (50) rounds, fired double action with the dominant hand from the instructor’s position of choice
Students currently employed as armed security guards must train and qualify with the handgun(s) they are authorized to carry in the performance of their duties utilizing service/duty ammunition.
Examination Failures
Any student who does not pass the exam the first time. You will have a second chance to do it again. If the student fails the second time. according to the regulations of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services the student will have to do the course again.

• Must have a clean police record, no felons)
• Copy of pistol license.
