Electrocution Prevention

Course Code: EP1

The 1-Hour Electrocution Prevention course is designed to educate construction and trade workers about the hazards of electrical work, safe practices, and OSHA’s standards for preventing electrocution incidents on the jobsite. Electrocution remains one of OSHA’s “Fatal Four” leading causes of death in the construction industry, making this training essential for all personnel who work around or with electrical equipment.

Participants will learn how electricity works, the different types of electrical hazards, and the safety measures necessary to protect themselves and others. The training emphasizes hazard recognition, safe work practices, and compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart K – Electrical, along with applicable NYC Department of Buildings Site Safety Training (SST) requirements.

This course covers the following topics:

• Identify and recognize potential electrical hazards in various work environments.
• Follow proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures before servicing or maintaining equipment.
• Use only properly rated and tested personal protective equipment (PPE) when working near electrical sources.
• Maintain safe distances from overhead and underground power lines.
• Inspect cords, plugs, and tools for damage before use.
• Ensure all temporary power sources and extension cords are GFCI-protected.
• Report unsafe electrical conditions to supervisors immediately.
• Follow OSHA, NFPA 70E, and NYC DOB safety requirements for electrical work.

This course counts as 1 Hour of General Elective credit toward your Site Safety Training (SST) card and is valid for 5 years from completion unless otherwise specified by New York City Buildings Department.
