The Role of the Security Guard in Serving Homeless Shelter Clients course is a comprehensive 40-hour training mandated by New York City Local Law 124. This specialized program is required for all security guards employed at Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters, ensuring they are fully prepared to manage the unique challenges of working in these sensitive environments.

Delivered by the International Development Institute (IDI), a certified training provider, this course exceeds the minimum requirements of Article 7-A of the General Business Law. It equips participants with the skills to handle crisis situations, de-escalate conflicts, and provide safe, respectful, and effective security services to individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health crises.

The training must be completed within 120 days of employment and includes an annual 8-hour refresher that covers engagement strategies and mental health crisis response. The program is conducted by qualified instructors with extensive security and law enforcement experience and may be offered in person or via live online instruction during public health emergencies.

Training Compliance:
All shelter operators must ensure that their contracted or employed security personnel complete this training and receive compensation at their regular hourly rate during instruction. Additionally, shelter operators are required to submit quarterly reports and annual certifications to the NYC Department of Homeless Services to verify full compliance.
