8-Hour Annual In-Service Security Guard Course Overview
Refresh the knowledge required for professional security work in New York, including lawful responsibilities, emergency procedures, communication, documentation, public interaction, access control, ethics, vigilance, and changing practices.
What You Will Review
Duties, Authority and Professional Conduct
Revisit guard responsibilities, legal powers and limitations, post orders, reliability, confidentiality, integrity, impartial conduct, and accountability.
Emergencies and Incident Response
Review situational awareness, notifications, response priorities, scene protection, cooperation with first responders, conflict awareness, de-escalation, and escalation procedures.
Communication and Report Writing
Strengthen radio and interpersonal communication, factual observation, chronological reports, note taking, public relations, witness interaction, and professional documentation.
Access Control and Security Awareness
Review credentials, visitors, deliveries, patrol practices, site monitoring, keys, suspicious activity, loss prevention, safety awareness, and appropriate reporting.
Annual Training and Registration Renewal
New York DOS states that this course must generally be completed each calendar year a security guard registration is held. Because registrations are issued for two years, two annual courses are generally required within the effective and expiration dates for renewal eligibility. Verify timing, exemptions, records, and renewal requirements for your individual situation.
Completion Does Not Automatically Renew a Registration
A course certificate does not itself renew a registration, guarantee eligibility or employment, or replace additional armed-guard firearms training. Confirm IDI’s current DCJS approval and all applicable DOS and DCJS requirements before enrolling.
